The chair has thousands of years of history. It came into use before Christ. Chair design is not easy and difficult, contrary to popular belief. Sitting in incorrectly designed chairs will cause discomfort and may also cause health problems.

Chair in the Sumerian Period

There are traces of the history of chairs dating back 6500 years. One of the oldest known evidence in history is a clay statue made around 4500 BC. The statue is a human figure with four legs sitting on a chair with a backrest. Sumerians, one of the first communities to use chairs; It is clearly visible in reliefs, sculptures and seals. Some of the Sumerian chairs are in the form of stools, while others have a backrest and arms. Sumerian chairs have a simple structure and do not have any decorations. When the statues and reliefs are examined, those sitting on the chairs; It has been seen that there were gods, kings and high-ranking people. If any of the Sumerian gods is sitting on a chair, the king waits standing. If the king was sitting on a chair, other people would stand and wait.

Chair in Rome, Greek Civilizations and Europe

There was a human figure sitting on a chair in Greece around 500 BC. These types of chairs, called Klimos, had curved legs and backrests and were used by high-ranking officials and high-ranking officials. In the reliefs in the Parthenon temple, the Greek god Zeus is sitting on a chair decorated with winged Sphinxes. Chairs in the Roman period were generally made of marble.

The chairs of the upper classes were decorated with Sphinxes. The General and senior Senators sat in wooden chairs that opened and closed. These chairs were generally decorated with ivory ornaments. Their feet were curved and had no backrest. In Europe, chairs were under the influence of the Greeks and Romans. The age of enlightenment, which continued to develop in the European continent in the 17th and 18th centuries, enabled the abandonment of past assumptions and the transition to the modern age. Modernity shed light on the path of innovation and transformation in individual and social living spaces. Thanks to the opinion leaders who enlightened people, new ideas and technological development took place. Due to this transformation, daily life and furniture were also affected. The variety of furniture has increased and become cheaper. Thus, chairs and different furniture that were accessible to the public were produced.
